History’s pages reveal to us illustrations that validate the "power of one". I can look at the Civil Rights movement and one lady, Rosa Parks who remained in her seat and refused to make her way to the back of the bus and changed the country’s view on racism forever. I can look at the early part of the 1990 decade in Waco, TX and see The Branch Davidian cult led by David Koresh that in a negative way proved to be a power of one that devastated our nation because of the violence and the casualties that were lost as a result of ungodliness and disobedience. We read many headlines concerning these events because they made the national press. Meanwhile, during this same period of time, a young man who was not in the headlines, who wasn’t involved in civil disobedience, nor was he involved in a cult, rather he was led by the power of one; the Holy Spirit of God.
David Crowder was a student at Baylor University when he realized that he was a minority; he took a stand for God and against sin. Statistics proved that the school’s enrollment consisted of 14,000 students. With that in mind, David also learned that although some may have been involved in some type of ministry, many did not regularly attend church services. Through his disappointment, a burden was placed on David to establish what is now known as University Baptist Church. A school where at one time most did not regularly attend church, now has a nearby college friendly place of worship where over a thousand are now seeking after and serving the true and living God and the majority of them being students.
The importance of connecting with the congregation is a key when working with a successful ministry. As David prayed about how he would connect his fellow students to God’s heart, the Lord began to deal with his heart and he began to write songs that would draw these students to the Savior. As the music ministry grew with David leading worship, a band began to form. As the band became a musical talent, the entire group recorded the songs that were written by Crowder and the idea behind that was so that the college students had something to share with their friends who didn’t attend church. Although several recordings surfaced over the ministry of this exciting band, their latest collaboration is A Collision. The recording was released in the fall of 2005 and has proved to be extremely successful. B Collision hits stores this summer with a twist that includes very exciting arrangements, unique instrumentation, as well as live performances with some very special guests to the David Crowder Band.
Although David’s schedule is extensive, he finds time to be a part of a ministry that shares the same goals and responsibilities as he does. Passion is a conference designed for college students that was developed and debuted a decade ago. Tens of thousands of students have been involved at this praise gathering. Lives have been changed and hearts given to the Lord. David is proud to be part of it as it is rooted in the same passion that drives him. The passion for the hearts of young people and the power that music has to move them towards the Lord.
We can read in the book of Acts about the power of the Holy Spirit, and how God wants us to be witnesses not on our own strength but by His strength and power alone. Although, there seems to be strength in numbers at times, when God is involved in the situation, the power of one person’s testimony, the power of one person’s stand for what is right, the power of one person’s strength hinges on the power of one Holy God.
