His Life

Have you ever wondered what colleagues and peers think of you? Have you ever made a bad business decision or said the wrong thing to the wrong person that not only affected you, but those whom you are relative to every day? Or you may have made a great move towards a charity for a catastrophic event that placed you head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. As I look at the life of David, I see several characteristics of a king. When others saw a shepherd boy God was able to see mighty warrior he would become. Few men of the Bible were favored more by God than David. What can we learn from this amazing story?

Samuel was on a mission, a mission that seemed impossible but with God all things are possible. His mission was to find a king that would replace Saul. His mission led him to Bethlehem, which was a significant city in its own rite, but it also led him to a significant family. The Bible tells us that Samuel went to the house of Jesse and it was there that we find several young men to choose from whom anxiously awaited to find out who would be crowned the next king.

In searching for the next king, we have to keep in mind the big picture. The nation of Israel up until this time had no confidence in themselves which led to not much confidence in God. They were tired of being a wimpy nation, they didn’t want to be recognized as a nation with low self esteem and low self worth, if we look at the battle of David and Goliath we can remember that even though Saul was taller and bigger than everyone else, he was afraid, scared and knew he could not obtain the victory. If the leader thought that of him, those thoughts carried down into the people of the nation. This time, they were looking for a valiant man, a mighty man, a man who could stand the test of time and lead them through the thick and the thin.

As the mission continued, Samuel was able to pick from the cream of the crop. He saw size, he saw might, he saw power, he saw attractiveness, but he didn’t find what he was looking for. Have you ever been in that boat? You have searched over and over to find what you believed in your heart was what you needed in your life and you searched to find that what you were looking for and what was meant to be were two totally different things. That was the case with Samuel. Samuel wasn’t planning on gazing over the pasture to find a ruddy ole little boy minding his own business doing what his father told him. Samuel asked Jesse, the father of the boys to get David. If we are faithful in the little things, God will make us ruler over many! David was obedient to His father which shows me the only characteristic that was needed to make him a great king. His obedience to his earthly father and the fact that he was found faithful doing what was asked of him showed the Lord that David would develop a heart like His and that he would be a great king for Israel.

As you know, David’s story doesn’t end there, he was human, he fell into temptation which led to extreme consequences, but it happens in our own lives as well. David wasn’t perfect, he never claimed to be, but he wanted to serve God with all that he had and in doing so, the Lord was pleased and used David in many ways to show the nation of Israel that without the strength of God almighty, they were not going to get anything accomplished in their own rite.

What we can learn from him

David’s life shows us many noble acts, but his faith and his steadfast commitment to God have continued to sharpen me in a profound way. Commitment is one thing that is missing in all aspects of society today. Whether it is churches, occupations, recreation, relationships or schools, our commitment level has dropped drastically over the past ten years. If we are able to practice characteristics of this king, such as obedience, commitment, and loyalty, the effect strong Christian men can have in their communities is mind boggling. I challenge you to be a man of your word, take the high water and the long road in this life and God will call you his chosen servant, just as he did David.
