Throughout the scriptures we are able to find prime examples of ordinary people who did extraordinary things for God. If we were to look in the Old Testament, we could see a weak, broken man by the name of Gideon who was under attack. Because God saw something in Gideon that Gideon couldn’t see in himself, he was referred to as a “mighty man of valor. God has never looked upon the ability of a man but on the availability to serve. When everyone saw a shepherd boy that day down in the sheep pasture of Bethelehem, God saw something more. So much more that Samuel was sent over to the house of Jesse to find the new king. God told Samuel not to look on his stature and how great of a man he appeared to be, because He didn’t look at anything but the heart. When everyone in the village that day saw a shaggy runt of a shepherd boy, God saw the next King of Israel.

During the midst of our country’s “Great Depression, God saw something in a farm boy from Montreat, NC. Billy Graham was a young man who was living the simple life. His family lived on sprawling pastures and low hills in the midst of a dairy farm. Although, Billy wasn’t extremely eager to work, he didn’t have much of a choice and he turned out to be a great asset to his family. Billy may not have particularly enjoyed working on the farm, but being obedient had its rewards. Billy enjoyed the game of baseball very much, and his father was well aware of that. As a matter of fact, Billy met Babe Ruth at an exhibition game and through his father was actually able to shake the “Great Bambino’s hand. The lesson of obedience that he learned as a young man was a characteristic trait that molded him into the man that he would soon become. As a matter of fact, I am sure that there were many things that were learned on the Graham farm that played a significant role in Billy’s ministry.

The entire Graham family had a reputation of being faithful to their God and to their church. They would sure that the whole family was in church every Sunday. It was even said that the question of whether or not they would be attending church was not even brought up because the children were aware of the consequences. The uncompromising stand that was taken by Billy’s parents early in their lives was now leading Billy to serve the God whom they worshipped and sang about.

After several years of preaching and learning the Word of God, it became clear what God wanted from Billy. Billy remembered that obedience was equivalent to happiness, and now it wasn’t a farm chore but a call upon his life to reach the multitudes with the message that Jesus saves. Billy truly became an ambassador for Christ. The word ambassador can be defined as an authorized messenger. God authorized Billy Graham with a call on His life to be a messenger of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

As a testament to the many lives that have been changed, touched, and impacted because of one man’s obedience, there is a new video documentary that takes you up close and personal to Dr. Graham’s life and ministry. The documentary, "Billy Graham: God's Ambassador," has recently become available for purchase while portions of it will be televised on The i Network and PBS this month. Learn more about this intriguing figure who will go down in history as God's Ambassador."
