Many claim Christians use God as a crutch. The weak hearted, down trotted, cling to this so called greater power like: an addict to his drug in time of need, a man of wealth to his status in time of failure, a woman to her sexuality in time of insecurity. And in fact at the time of crying out to God many of us are broken. Our lives are in shambles, we’ve had, affairs, eating disorders, drug addictions, sexual addictions, gambling addictions. We’re, depressed, ill, abandoned, broken hearted; heck we’re even everything we’re supposed to be: rich, handsome, beautiful, fit, thin, successful, but we are utterly and completely empty.
In fact it wasn’t too long ago I myself was a few of these things, and the same God who rescued you, rescued me, and the same God who rescued us, can rescue you.
I am not ashamed to say my friends, the claims are true. For the Christian, God is our one and only crutch. And you shouldn’t be ashamed to say it either. Have you tried to walk in this world and live an upright life? It takes more than two legs to get you by. I will say it again, God is indeed our crutch; He is our sustainer, our deliverer, our ever present help in time of need. And if you wake up each day as a believer and you don’t need God, I am sorry to say it but perhaps you haven’t really walked to the front of the battle lines, and some of us are walking around with two crutches just to carry your load.
Men, anyone can live like the world does. It doesn’t take much to roll out of bed and decide today is all about you. What you’ll wear, what you’ll eat, where you’ll go for lunch, what sales you’ll get out of the old guy who doesn’t even know what you’re selling, what time you’ll get home, what time you’ll watch your favorite show. These me, me, me thoughts are child’s play in the Christian walk; and no one needs a crutch to walk like a child. But get out of bed and submit your life to God for the day, and see how far you make it without that crutch, by your second thought, you’ll be back to thinking about the same old thing, YOU.
The strongest men in the Bible weren’t afraid to walk with God, so why should you be? Too many of us let our pride get in the way of letting God accomplish greater things through us for His glory. Our idea of intimately knowing God and walking side by side with him is sitting in church singing praise songs all day, or listening to all Christian radio stations. Let’s get real, look at the men who walked with God, Daniel, Moses, Jesus, Joseph, Noah, Job, David. These men walked with God as their crutch day and night, and you better believe they needed him and weren’t ashamed to say it.
I challenge you to walk with God to the front of the Christian battlefield let him be your staff in your right hand as he was for Moses, and leave behind what your friends, family, and co-workers are saying about you. When you serve God full heartedly “forgetting about yourself long enough to serve others you’ll need God as a crutch. Just put yourself in these scenarios for a moment. When you enter a lion’s den like Daniel, you’ll need God, when you approach your modern day Pharaoh, like Moses, you’ll need God, when you are persecuted as many missionaries have been like Christ, you’ll need God, when you are promised greater things, like Joseph, and nothing but trouble comes your way, you’ll need God, when you are building what God has asked you to do, like Noah, and you are mocked, you’ll need God, when you suffer without reason great tragedy, death in the family, constant illness, a loss of all your career success, like Job, you’ll need God, when you are chased from your leadership rights God has promised you, and the current person in that position sets out to sabotage you, like Saul did to David, you’ll NEED God. God is our crutch; don’t be afraid to say it!
