Give a Heifer
Christmas is just around the corner. As you make your holiday gift list, along with the ties for Dad and the video games for your nephew, why not add a heifer or maybe a goat? I’m not suggesting that you give your Aunt Mary a farm animal instead of a nice sweaterâ€"she probably wouldn’t appreciate that. But there are millions of people in the world who desperately need such gifts.

Through an organization called Heifer International, you can change the lives of a family with an affordable donation. The beauty of this program is that it helps to lift people from poverty to self-reliance. Recipients are required to “Pass on the Gift by sharing their livestock’s offspring with others in need.

Since it began in 1944, Heifer has helped families in more than 50 countries, including the Unites States. According to the United Nations, every day 100,000 people die due to hunger related disease, and Heifer is doing all they can to change that.

A heifer can be purchased for $500 or a share of a heifer for $50. Just one cow may produce four gallons of milk per day, enough for a family to drink and take to market. A goat costs $120 or a share can be purchased for $10. Goats produce a gallon of milk a day, which is used for drinking and making cheese. For the same price, you can purchase a sheep that produces wool to knit and weave and then take to market.

Heifer International has been praised by Presidents Jimmy Carter and George Bush. Worth Magazine has selected Heifer as one of America’s 100 best charities and Forbes Magazine named Heifer one of its 10 “Gold Star charities.

This year, instead of buying another sweatshirt for your brother, why not donate a share of a pig in his name? For more information, please contact Heifer International at 800-696-1918 to receive a free gift catalog or visit the website at www.heifer.org.
