So you're stuck in a job that doesn't fit you, what's new? You and most the people around you feel the same way. With the wife and kids at home, the bills, the college loans, you feel obligated to stay. Unfortunately there are no clear arrows pointing which direction to go, so you muttle through day after day, after day. Well what can you do about it?
Lucky for you people have spent decades and decades studying how to help others achieve their goals and dreams. Usually we are handed self assessment tests to see which careers we should head for, only to find in the end they still bore us, or give us burn out. You would think by now someone would have figured out which is the right direction to point you in. However, what if you learned it wasn't about your job but how you function in your role at your job that makes you feel unappreciated, unsatisfied, burnt out, unstimulated, and all those other things. What if you found out you were working mostly with your weaknesses in full affect and not putting your strengths to use? Maybe things could change...hmmm...
Well according to a study called Strength Finders, many people work each day without tapping into their natural abilities and talents. They have studied 34 categories to help people just like you, understand how to stop focusing on their weaknesses, and start using their strenghths. The strength finders book offers a small code (book must be purchased) in the back that gives you access to a test. At the end of the test you are given your top 5 strengths, often very different than what you would assume. You are then able to read through the book to see how those strengths play out in different circumstances, in different work settings.
Upon feeling burnt out in my own job, I took the test and learned first and foremost I am a strategic person. Now you would think that goes hand in hand with sales, but I graduated with a Psychology degree, and always thought I was more empathetic than strategic or analytical. Turns out everything has to fit into a plan for me, and when it does, I am most satisfied. Throwing out willy nilly sales calls made me feel completely exhausted and worthless at the end of the day. However, strategizing my call list, and what information I was going to get out of the call and setting the scene for the next time I called that customer was what made me feel most valuable, and guess what...it actually started generating more sales! I am strategic by nature, it's what I do best, and when I am doing my best, I feel my best.
If you are unsure of what buried talents you have use the great resources around you to make the most of your gifts in all circumstances. Paul was able to be content in all circumstances, including prison, how much more able should you and I who have homes and places to rest our heads be content? Putting our natural God given abilities and talents to use in the work place each day is not only glorifying to God, it is a chance to recieve even more than what we are currently in charge of. Remember the man who buried his talents, in the end it was all taken from him. You may not be starting out with much, but it is something and currently it is your circumstance. Make the most of it for the sake of His glory, and put your strengths to work.
