Why is it that “dinner and a movie have become the typical date? A movie is one of the most illogical places to go on a date; for one, a date is meant to allow two people to talk and get to know each other, and two, lets face it, movies are getting less and less appropriate, even for adults. But unfortunately, going to a movie seems to be the usual Friday night outing for many couples, because frankly, it’s hard to think of anything else to do! So here are some slightly off-the-beaten path ideas that will give you a good way to spend time with your lady, have some fun, and impress her with your originality all at the same time!

1) Forget dinner at a restaurant and try a home-cooked meal. Even if you can’t cook, go get your mom’s recipe for spaghetti and throw together something easy. Or if you are both comfy in the kitchen, cook dinner together! This will either produce a really great meal or a very messy and entertaining evening. Afterwards try playing some board games, video games, or looking at old photos. Anything for a little fun and amusement!

2) Something sweet and a nice walk are a great way to spend a few hours with your lady. Take her to get some cookies or ice-cream, and go for a walk somewhere nice. In my hometown, we have a beautiful park alongside a river; a place like this makes the perfect spot to chat for a while and enjoy the scenery.

3) Try doing something a little childish and playful. Find out of she likes a certain sport or what her favorite playground toy was as a child. A frisbee and a large courtyard, or a children’s swing-set can make you both feel like kids again.

4) For a great weekend getaway, get together with another couple and go camping at one of your state parks. These are beautiful places, especially this time of year, and the weather is absolutely perfect. During the day you can go hiking, fishing, biking, swimming, or a myriad of other activities offered at most locations. Then in the evening grill something up for dinner, and build a campfire to make smores for desert.

5) Nothing beats sharing childhood memories. If you live in the town where you or she grew up, ride around together and drive past your old houses, schools, and hangouts. This is a great way to share your stories, laugh together, and get to know each other at the same time.

6) Find something interesting to photograph. Every city or area has something unique to explore, and these places provide a great location for a little amateur photography and investigation. Go to the historic district in your town and find out where the old train station or if there was once a mill town there. These places are often easy to discover as they are the cultural center of most metro areas. Go walk around these neighborhoods and photograph the interesting pieces of the past. Then not only do you have the conversation and memories for later, you also have great photos as a memento of your outing.

7) Use what your town offers! If you have miniature golf, an ice skating rink, whitewater rafting, an amusement park, or anything of the sort, you have the perfect place for a really fun date.
Not only do these allow you to be yourself and enjoy each other’s company, they are also a great opportunity to show off a little… or make a fool of yourself!

8) Find out what’s going on around your city! Whether it’s a fall festival, museum event, local theatre productions, or charity gatherings, you can find something to interest both of you and provide an entertaining evening.
