As the Christian music industry has expanded in recent years, there are times where we can sense that some of the music is simply mass produced, trying to put out another album to reach a preset commitment. Some of the recent years of Christian music has lacked heart, run short on passion, and left the listener wondering what had happened to the industry. With Warren Barfield’s newest release, Worth Fighting For, heart and passion are the core of the album as Warren sings with heart the words that he wrote with conviction.

This is the third release from Barfield and is his best to date. The album reaches across genres, opening the door for listeners of all styles to find something appealing in this album. From rock to soul, Barfield spans across the various styles of music with his incredible lyrics and one of the most powerful and incredible voices in Contemporary Christian Music today. More importantly, the album seeks to lead everyone closer to the throne of the Lord, speaking in depth of Warren’s faith and convictions in life. He pours his heart and soul into the lyrics and into the performance on the album. He gives his audience all that he has, not looking to garner acclaim for himself but so that others will praise God. He allows us to walk with him down the spiritual trail that he is blazing, hoping to spark a fire in our lives.

The album starts off with a couple of upbeat, rock style anthems that will definitely reach out to the younger generations. They are songs about the love of Christ being the one thing that will never run out in the course of this life and living the Christian life not just with words, but also with our actions. These songs hold the messages that we need to hear in our daily lives as we face the struggles of being in this world and not being of it.
The headlining song off this album is entitled “Love is not a fight”. This song is being used in the upcoming film Fireproof, from the makers of Facing the Giants. “Love is not a fight” is a song about the sanctity of marriage and of entering the commitment without the belief that we can simply walk away when things are not going the way that we envisioned them. This song will touch your heart and is an anthem for restoring marriages in our world today, especially inside the church. One line from the song that sticks out says, “If we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the doors.” It is prayer that we should all have for our marriages and should be the attitude that we have towards the one that we have taken vows with in our lives. This song is God-breathed and is perfect for every person who is married or is headed toward marriage in their lives.

Another powerful song is “Drop the World”. Barfield sings about a woman in pain and pleads with God to drop the world and hold her. It is something that we have all felt in our lives if we have seen some woman that we have loved going through many painful things, especially divorce. It echoes the sentiment that I felt when my mother was going through her divorce and as you listen to this song, you will be able to identify with its’ lyrics from some time in your past as well.

“As it is in Heaven” is a beautifully written song about the desire to see the world look more like heaven and less like what it has become in recent years. This track is one of the most outstanding on the album as it is written in the form of a prayer, with Barfield allowing the audience to take a glimpse into his prayer life. It’s as honest of a song that has ever been written and causes the soul of a Christian to yearn even more for the day when we will be in the midst of the Lord in heaven.

From top to bottom, this album is solid, not overcome with fillers or songs that are lacking from the best songs on the album. He is consistent in messages from his previous albums, as the song “Reflect You” is written in the same manner as his hit “Mistaken”. Barfield is genuine in his faith and it is reflected in his words and in his voice. Everything in this album points to Jesus and that is where this artist’s heart is set. This album is one that every Christian should have with them as Barfield has not compromised his beliefs for fame or for money. In a world where Christian music has become big business, Barfield has stayed grounded and has not strayed from his original call into music; to make a joyful noise and lead others to a stronger walk with Christ. These are the ministries that we need to support.

* - Prodigal Son Magazine is issuing another challenge to its’ readers. We are challenging you to buy two copies of this album. The first copy is for you to keep with you, but we are asking that you pass the second copy on to a marriage that is struggling. “Love is not a fight” is a song that we believe God can use to refocus struggling marriages back on to the original love that was the pushing force for the marriage but was lost in the midst of trials within the union. We ask that you pray over the CD before giving it away and once given, we ask that you pray for that marriage daily, that God will use this tool to help save the marriage. Christians are needed today to help struggling marriages survive and not simply turn a blind eye to their struggles.
