Recently I picked up a refreshing album by a band named Leeland. You might have heard of them by now, they are getting some play on both the Christian and secular airwaves. Leeland offers something that is a breath of fresh air to the listener that is picky about their Christian music taste.
Their sound is something that is similar to that of Keane, or a much softer version of Anberlin. Probably the most impressive thing about the Sound of Melodies album is the way that the message of our dependence on the lord is conveyed. Songs like “Reaching”, “Yes You Have” and “Carried to the Table” all remind us that all good things come from above and without the Lord our hopes would be vanquished. There are plenty of catchy verses and melodies that stick in your head. While the overall music quality is probably a 7 out of 10, the creativity would lean more towards a 9 of 10. Tears of the Saints could very possibly be one of the most beautiful and humbling songs I have ever heard. “There are tears from the saints for the lost and unsaved, we’re crying for them come back home, crying for them come back home. All your children will stretch out their hands and pick up the crippled man, father we will lead them home, father we will lead them home.” When was the last time that any of us have cried for the souls of the lost? Yesterday, a month ago, a year ago, ever? If not we have some serious issues as the body of Christ. The song goes on to say that this situation is an emergency and in all honesty it is. Lives are being lost and souls are turning away. Every believer should listen to this song but take it a step further and listen to the whole album as it is very encouraging, humbling, and passionate. Not to mention you will never believe that the voice you hear is coming from a teenager.
