By now, you’ve heard about Dreamgirls. You’ve seen the previews. You’ve read the great reviews it’s getting, but you still haven’t gone. Why? Probably because most couples don’t want to spend their date nights watching musicals, and I would venture to say that on the average, most guys would not only want to watch musicals, but would in fact want to avoid seeing them at all…ever.
But here I am telling you to go see it, if for no other reason, because it is an excellent “date-movie.
Never-mind the fact that Eddie Murphy gives the performance of his life, or the fact that Jennifer Hudson steals the entire picture in what will surely be called her “break-out role. Also never-mind the fact that Jamie Foxx is an excellent mix of suavity and greed, and that Beyonce Knowles will win your attention with more than just her looks, because she can actually act, too. Go see this film because it’s the perfect movie to watch with the person you care for.
Dreamgirls brings numerous themes to mind but the two questions it leaves simmering in your brains are: What does it mean to really trust the person I love? And what defines family?
What relationship doesn’t need to have those questions asked? And all of this while being a truly entertaining movie that leaves you feeling good but is not itself a cheesy, “feel-good movie!
The swearing is mild and not gratuitous (and used at times when virtually anyone would let one fly), the sexuality and innuendo are almost nonexistent and are only used to tell the story, (not to show off actresses’ bodies). And the drug use is implied for characterization, but thankfully not shown on screen (for all of us to dwell on).
Go see this movie…even if you hate musicals. Take your wife or girlfriend. You won’t regret the time and money spent. The acting and the music are so well done you can’t help but tap your feet or bob your head even if it’s not your thing. Talk to them afterwards about trust, love, family, greed, music…whatever. Just go.
