It is true most of the time that bands fronted by a female singer like to capitalize on this novelty by featuring itself with the typical girlish traits. A large number of these acts present their fans with a montage of songs that would tempt them to peevishly curl their hair with their fingers, suck on a lollipop and engage in some silly dance routine. This however is not the case with (city’s) Flyleaf, whose lead vocalist would certainly scare off all the slumber party goers who may mistakenly play their CD on some pink, sticker-ridden stereo system; indeed, they are not for the faint of heart. Their self-titled debut album delivers a searing collection of inspiring melodies, brutal yet tasteful guitar work, pounding drum beats and just plain down, dirty, gritty rock and roll.
The first track on the CD, I’m So Sick, marks the band’s first video which is currently aired on most of the major music video channels, even achieving the number one spot on the Christian video program 10 Most Wanted. In the video, the group is performing inside the padded cell of a mental health facility, all the while convincingly playing the part of patients who happen to be staging the concert to themselves.
But, Flyleaf is not all ‘touch-as-nails’ attitude topped off with passionate singing. Lyrically, they are committed to what they believe, that Christ is the only way for a lost world. With words that prick the heart to its core, this hard rock band possesses a soft heart in spite of a rough exterior.
If there is anything one can learn from this band, it is the age-old adage that one should never judge a book by its cover. If Jesus came to this earth with carpenter’s callous hands and a whip for the deceivers of his temple, then the heavy hitting music that Flyleaf offers is just an expression of the tougher side of the divine.
